Your Puppy: First Day's Together

Most people wish to have their pup examined by a vet in the first few days home. You may wish to set up a visit in advance. He will also need a vet exam and 2nd vaccination when he is 9 to 10 weeks of age. It is important to keep him on the vaccination schedule. He will need his 3rd shot at 12 to 13 weeks, and his rabies when he is 14 to 16 weeks. (After that you’re good for a year).

Your first few nights at home will be noisy as he is used to sleeping with siblings near other dogs. A few tips that may help him settle are covering his crate with a blanket (leave air space of course) to make it feel safe and cozy. He is also accustomed to a radio playing here, so give that a try to if you’d like. I highly recommend crate training and confinement to small areas of the house while he learns the rules. Allow him to try out his crate a few times before bed time and locking him in. He has been in a wire crate here a few times, so it shouldn’t be a shock to him. If he needs to go out at night, make the encounter as brief as possible and then back to bed, no playing as this will just rev him up.Take him to a designated area of the yard, and never play in this area. He will soon learn the reason for going to the ‘potty spot’.

Feed your puppy on a schedule, and make sure he can be taken outside a few minutes after meal time. Take him out to his potty spot and wait for him to take care of business. Use a simple word as he 'goes' and praise when he is done. One common problem with young pups is they tend to get distracted and not finish, then have an accident inside a few minutes after you come back in. Be aware of this and make sure your not playing with him or letting him play too much when out for business. Keep distractions such as other people and pets out of his sight so he can focus.

Don't give your new pup too much freedom in his new home. Keep him confined to small areas with easy to clean flooring. He will soon come to know this small area as his den and be less likely to soil it. Give him more space and more freedom only as he earns it. Keep him under close supervision and on leash right next to you when not in his 'area'. If there are accidents be sure to place a few of the soiled towels outside in his potty spot so he will associate the smell. Also be very sure to deodorize the soiled floor indoors.
